I Hate Your Messenger.

The only messenger I use is Skype. I like the easy on the eyes User Interface and the ability to make conference calls and group chats with ease. The absence of random junk cluttered around the contact list is also nice. Now, from worst to less worse, the messengers I dislike.
My least favorite messenger is AIM. I hate it. The window is way too tiny to be likable. The design is bland and unappealing. I do not like staring at grays, reds, and oranges all day. The automatic smileys are gross and the menus do not seem very user friendly. These may be superficial, but it's enough to drive me away. Some people insist on using it, so I just use AIM express for those stubborn folk or people that have the application on their phone.
Next on the list of less favorite messengers is Yahoo. Dear god, I hate Yahoo Messenger. When you get a notification, the window feels the need to pop up over everything you are doing. Also, whenever you start up Yahoo! Instant Messenger, another window appears alongside the main window and shows random updates from the web about celebrity crap, assuming you care about it. Ugly automatic smileys here too. Small window again. That just puts me off for some reason. I like the history archive system, though. It's better than Skype's, honestly.
Windows Live is a messenger that is actually mediocre (as opposed to being terrible like the previously mentioned Instant Messengers.) and there is really only one reason for that: the customization of smileys. I don't need to get started on the unnecessary clutter and eye sore menus, as well as the awkward User Interface.
Concluding paragraph, get Skype. Please. It doesn't have customizable smileys (yet, but you can disable the default smileys and at least these smileys have charm), but it's not an eyesore and it's really accessible. No, this is not advertising or viral marketing, but if you're going to instant message me, avoid being a bum and get Skype. It's not that hard. If you were able to download AIM, Y!IM, or Windows Live, you can download this. Believe me.

  1. I don't have much tolerance for IM clients either. I'm a guy who hates change, but it's never a good thing when your favorite IM programs, or even just the popular ones become cluttered/bloated. They slow your computer to a crawl, and shove all kinds of ads, and useless features in your face. In turn, this slows down your system, and shortens your patience. Skype is slowly becoming worse in my opinion.

  2. Lesser of two evils. I see what you mean, though.

  3. I just use Pidgin and shit for AIM/MSN because that shit is way too cluttered and takes up memory. If there was a program that did the same thing for Skype I'd use that too, but whatever.
